The living soul of Spain: a journey through its Intangible Cultural Heritage

Spain is a mosaic of voices, gestures, and traditions that together shape our identity. In every celebration, craft, and song lies a shared story passed down from generation to generation. This is what we call Intangible Cultural Heritage — an invisible yet deeply alive legacy that connects us as a community.

Unlike tangible heritage — monuments, buildings, works of art — intangible heritage cannot be touched, but it can be felt. It is expressed through rituals, music, dances, crafts, and traditional knowledge that define our ways of life. To speak of intangible heritage is to speak of living memory: of stories told by the fire, of harvest songs, or of family recipes that withstand the passing of time.

Cultural diversity: a shared treasure

Spain is one of the countries with the largest number of UNESCO-recognized Intangible Cultural Heritage elements: from flamenco and the Mediterranean diet to the human towers (castells), the Fallas of Valencia, or falconry. Each of these expressions reflects the creativity, history, and collective spirit that define us.

Yet beyond international recognition, the true richness lies in everyday life — in the villages, neighborhoods, and communities that keep their traditions alive. It is the people who embody and transmit this heritage that ensure its continuity. Caring for them means caring for our cultural future.

Tradition in motion

Intangible heritage is not static — it evolves and adapts. New generations reinterpret traditions, add innovation, and blend the old with the contemporary. This ongoing transformation shows that our heritage is alive, continuing to pulse through the ways we celebrate, communicate, and work.

To preserve it does not mean to freeze it in time, but to accompany its transformation with respect and awareness. Every community has the power to keep it relevant, integrating it into modern life without losing its essence.

A window to discover it: the new Portal of Intangible Cultural Heritage

To make this cultural richness more visible, the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sport has launched the Portal of Spain’s Intangible Cultural Heritage, introduced in an inspiring video you can watch here.

This portal brings together, for the first time, the various manifestations, practices, and expressions that make up the living heritage of Spain. It includes information sheets, photographs, videos, and a participatory section called “Your Voice”, where anyone can share their experiences or knowledge about local traditions.

More than a repository, it is an open and collaborative platform that invites everyone to discover, learn, and take part in building a shared cultural narrative.

At Espacio Cultivare, we celebrate this initiative that reminds us that intangible heritage does not belong in museums — it lives within people: in their gestures, flavors, and stories that connect us with our roots.

Protecting and sharing it is everyone’s task. Because to care for heritage is to care for the memory and diversity that make us unique.

We are all heritage.
